Castor oil is derived from castor beans and is rich in protein, antioxidants, nutrients, and fatty acids. As a result, castor oil can possibly be helpful for skin, scalp, and hair.

Jamaican black castor oil also comes from castor beans, which is why it shares a similar name to traditional castor oil. However, the method of extraction is different, resulting in an entirely different substance with different uses. The traditional Jamaican black castor oil process involves the following steps. First, the seeds are roasted before being crushed in a mortar. Water is then added to the mashed beans, and the entire mixture is slow-boiled over a fire.

The result of this preparation is a pungent, thick and dark brown oil that we call Jamaican black castor oil.

Frequently asked questions

No salt in used when making our Let’s Grow Jamaican Black Castor Oil

First of the method of extraction: The traditional method of extracting JBCO is through roasting the castor beans, then grinding those beans into a thicker paste and boiling it in a vessel containing hot water. The difference in the density of oil and water makes the oil rise to the surface which is then separated and collected in the bottle. The oil thus extracted is popularly known as JBCO.

One of the most apparent differences between both oils is the colour. Castor oil is pale yellow. The lighter the colour of the oil, the purer it is. The rich, dark colour of JBCO is due to the presence of burnt ashes in it

JBCO is also a natural antibacterial and antifungal, so it’s great for those who have flaky or itchy scalp conditions. But, as you’ll notice, JBCO is a heavy, sticky oil – it’s not an oil that you apply all over your hair every day. Instead, apply a small amount to your roots and scalp at night before bed.
